India has always been renowned for its rich silk fabrics, woodcarvings and carpets. However, many of these products are produced in conditions of abject poverty for the craftsmen, who are exploited by large producers and moneylenders. Based in Mumbai and meaning "hope" in Sanskrit, Asha Handicrafts is a not-for-profit, fair trade organization that has been working to promote the social and economic development of artisans throughout India for more than 40 years. As a member of the World Fair Trade Organization, Asha partners with more than 50 producer groups and more than 1,200 makers across India to ensure that the benefits of handicraft production directly reach craftspeople—and provide buyers from around the world with unique, handmade items.
